One thing I am disappointed about though is the m. 2 slot is a SATA connection so to use it would be 0 benefit to me

Well technically yes, practically it would mean buy another laptop. The mobile cpus are very expensive and hard to come by and in a lot of  laptops( mainly the big brands) core components are soldered in place.  It pretty much means you can replace:
- Memory
- wifi / bluetooth
- HDD/SSD
- Optical drive

But thats about it.

PS: if you have a macbook you're pretty much fucked when you want te replace anything.
Spearhead ftw!

I never knew that. I thought it was just as easy as swapping out parts on a PC.
Kinda makes me feel bad when I met my friends cousin and he said "I rebuild, repair and resell Laptops for a living" and I just looked at him like he said "You may find this hard to believe but I change my own video card"  ???
